Job description

Job Description

Te Haeata / The Opportunity

We are looking for people as passionate about data as we are. In Sector Insights, we are united in a common goal of using data to drive insights to inform decision making by justice sector leaders. We support justice agencies to work together to deliver ambitious results for a fair and safe Aotearoa.

As an Analyst (Level 1), you'll play a key role in producing the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey (NZCVS) – a nationwide survey that provides a vital picture of both reported and unreported crime. This work is central to understanding what's happening, why it's happening, and how we can make a difference.

You'll apply your research, statistical, and coding skills to design, analyse, and interpret survey data, and you'll explore complex issues facing the justice sector. Sometimes you'll work to a clear hypothesis; other times, you'll dive into the data to uncover patterns and insights that others might miss.

Critically, you'll turn complex findings into clear, plain-English narratives that help decision-makers and the public understand what's happening and why.

Now is an exciting time for you to become part of the Ministry of Justice in Sector Insights as advice we provide is highly sought after. Our work is characterised by innovation, quality, and impact, and we inform the direction of Justice agencies.

Ō Pūkenga / Skills And Experience

  • Passion and curiosity - with a strong desire to explore new opportunities for using data insights
  • A positive can-do attitude and willingness to learn
  • Flexibility to respond to ambiguity, multiple deadlines and changing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and manage relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Experience in statistical analysis and / or social survey research.
  • A delivery focus, with persistence to work towards long term goals
  • Good communication skills and the ability to translate your findings into a compelling plain-English narrative
  • A strong sense of team, engaging and helping others around you to succeed
  • A tertiary degree in a relevant field, with a strong quantitative or statistical component
  • Skills in coding or analytical software (such as SAS, R, or similar).

Mō mātou / About us

At Te Tāhū o te Ture - the Ministry of Justice, we're committed to strengthening people's trust in the law of Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Sector Insights is comprised of five teams – Reporting and Advice; Research and Evaluation; Analytics and Modelling, Business Intelligence and Data Response.

We work collaboratively, turning data into insight to support the delivery of better services and outcomes to people engaging with the Justice system. We achieve this by helping our partners answer three critical questions : What's happening? Why is it happening? and What would happen if?

This allows the Ministry's policy and operational leaders to focus their improvement efforts on the areas that will make the biggest difference to New Zealanders.

Our work is challenging and complex. Our goals are ambitious. We make a real difference to the New Zealand Justice system. Our teams are sharp‑minded, curious and influential. We have inspirational leaders who support, challenge and actively promote career development. Work‑life balance is a priority for us, and everyone is encouraged to support their wellbeing. We offer a dynamic and social environment, a place you can be yourself.
