We're seeking a capable and values-driven Distance Running Squad Coach to join our team in the Sports Department, helping us deliver the high standards and care we're known for.
Job Description
Mo te turanga : About the role
We are seeking a dedicated Running Coach to lead our College squad through a mix of social yet competitive training and racing.
Training sessions are held Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 : 50–8 : 00 am, based at the Sports Centre.
The program includes varied workouts such as speed sessions, hill reps, track efforts, and continuous runs (5–8 km at 5 : 30–6 : 00 / km pace).
The team competes in the cross-country season (January–June, culminating in the NZ Secondary Schools Championships) and the summer road / track season (ending with the NZSS Track & Field / Road Race Championships in December).
Key responsibilities include planning and leading engaging training sessions, mentoring runners of all levels, ensuring safety and wellbeing, fostering an inclusive team culture, assisting with event preparation and race strategy, and maintaining clear communication with the Sports Office, parents, and athletes.
Duration & Events : Year-round role supporting training and key competitions, including school athletics, cross country, regional and national championships, and the NZSS Road Race Relay Festival.
The end date for this position is 27th November 2025.
Responsibilities and Qualifications
Proven experience in coaching or competing in distance running (preferably at a high school or competitive level).
Strong knowledge of training techniques, injury prevention, and race preparation.
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills to inspire and motivate young athletes.
Commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment.
Ability to work collaboratively with parents and school staff.
