Through integration and collaboration, we're building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whanau-centred care, and excellence.About the RoleThe Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Neonatal Intensive Care provides specialist nursing advice, care and expertise, both in delivering direct patient care and in supporting other staff caring for neonates with complex conditions.
The CNS practices with increased autonomy, by working at an advanced level within the RN scope of practice (Te Kaunihera Tapuhi o Aotearoa Nursing Council of New Zealand / NCNZ 2025).
The focus is on assisting, directing and supporting patient care and whanau within the NICU and across other services involved in neonatal care.About the Team / Service LocationThe Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Service provides tertiary-level care for the Central Region of New Zealand and operates a 24-hour Infant Retrieval Service.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is resourced for up to 36 cots, with the ability to expand to 40 when required.The service also provides telephone consultation and clinical advice across the region, as well as education and support to Level II referral units.
Within the Capital & Coast area, the NICU delivers Level II and Level I neonatal care, ensuring continuity of care for infants and families.The NICU team is a multidisciplinary workforce comprising neonatologists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff.
The team works collaboratively to provide family-centred, safe, and evidence-based care for premature and critically unwell infants.
In addition to direct clinical care, the team supports families in transition from hospital to community services and contributes to regional quality improvement, teaching, and education initiatives.About youAll nurses employed by Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand will have Registration with the New Zealand Nursing Council and maintain a current Annual Practising Certificate as a Registered Nurse.The CNS role supports excellence in practice through modelling expert clinical skills, promoting best practice, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and providing education.
The CNS has an active role in the development and achievement of the strategic direction for the neonatal services.
The CNS leads development and implementation of speciality specific pathways, protocols and guidelines, in accordance with relevant national and international standards and guidance.
