We are seeking outgoing, reliable individuals who want to protect this beautiful backyard as Biosecurity Ambassadors.
This is the perfect opportunity to take on exciting temporary summer work and kick-start your new year with a passion.
The role : Serious biosecurity issues, including plant diseases, rodents and marine pests, to name a few, are affecting our Hauraki Gulf / Thikapa Moana and Islands, and we want you to be an ambassador to prevent further harm.
You will be educating boaties and visitors at key waterfront boat and ferry departure points in Tamaki Makaurau / Auckland traveling to Hauraki Gulf / Thikapa Moana and its islands on the importance of preventing the spread of pests and diseases and how this can occur.
You will be working in pairs, scheduled on a roster and will be primarily working on Fridays, weekends and public holidays, starting from 2nd December
All Ambassadors must also be comfortable and confident approaching and talking to people, working outdoors and in a variety of locations.
Reliable transport is a must.
Training will be provided.
Start date : The assignment runs from 2nd December to 27th April (you can choose to finish around Auckland Anniversary / Waitangi weekend for the university term).
Hours : Part time, usually 18 hours per week (6-hour shifts - Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays).
Some mid-week work may be required during the peak holiday season.
Shifts are weather dependent.
Locations : Boat ramps and marinas including but not limited to : Bayswater, Browns Bay, Beachlands, Gulf Harbour, Half Moon Bay, Kawakawa Bay, Maraetai Omaha, Orakei, Outboard Boating Club, Pine Harbour, Takapuna, West Harbour and West Haven and possibly others.
Relevant public events such as Auckland Boat Show and Anniversary weekend festivals.
Key responsibilities :
Engaging with people in friendly, meaningful conversations, educating boaties and visitors boat ramps and marinas, and attending summer events.
Encouraging best biosecurity practices, such as checking and cleaning shoes, bags, gear, vessels, boats and vehicles.
Collecting data and reporting this to the Biosecurity Ambassador Coordinator.
Reporting any issues (including H & S) and non-compliance to the Biosecurity Coordinator (note that this is not an enforcement role).
Monitoring availability of information material and distributing collateral as needed.
Attending briefings and training sessions as required.
The ideal candidate :
Has a demonstrated interest in Aotearoa's marine and terrestrial environments, biosecurity and conservation topics.
Has access to a reliable means of transport.
Has a reliable smartphone.
Is mature and responsible and is an organised and reliable worker.
Has strong communication and people skills and an interest in manaakitanga.
Having an outgoing and engaging personality is a must.
Can problem solve effectively and make key decisions in a timely manner.
