Assume overall command of the vessel, ensuring safe navigation, operation, and management at all times. Ensure compliance with company policies, international conventions, and statutory regulations (ISM Code, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, etc.). Oversee voyage planning, navigation, and watchkeeping standards, ensuring accuracy and safety throughout. Lead, supervise, and mentor deck officers and crew, promoting professionalism, teamwork, and high safety standards. Maintain proper records and documentation, including ship’s logbooks, safety records, and statutory certificates. Ensure readiness and effective operation of all safety, lifesaving, and firefighting equipment; lead emergency drills. Manage cargo operations, stability, ballasting, and load-line compliance to ensure safe and efficient voyages. Liaise with company management, port authorities, and external stakeholders regarding vessel operations. Monitor vessel condition, report deficiencies, and ensure prompt corrective actions are taken. Valid Master (STCW II / 2) Certificate of Competency (CoC) issued by an IMO-recognized authority. Valid Maritime New Zealand Medical Certificate . Proven seagoing experience in a command or senior deck officer capacity on bulk carriers or similar vessels. Thorough knowledge of international conventions, safety management systems, and maritime regulations. Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing . Strong leadership and communication skills. References from previous employers or maritime industry contacts.
