We are seeking an experienced
Production Automation & Systems Support Engineer
for our Christchurch plant.
Reporting to the Reliability Engineering Manager, the primary focus of this role is maintaining the stability and performance of our Christchurch factory production systems.
This role involves monitoring systems, responding to incidents, resolving issues, and ensuring that services are restored quickly when problems occur.
Work closely with operations teams to identify and resolve any issues by troubleshooting of software, PLCs, HMIs, ancillary machines, and contribute to process optimization by leveraging industrial automation, Industry 4.0, and data-driven solutions.
By enhancing plant automation, this role will reduce downtime, improve quality, optimize energy usage, and increase throughput.
Manage relationships with external providers / vendors focusing on reducing downtime due to production systems outages.
The role ensures efficient, safe, and reliable operation of equipment—particularly LISEC, Glaston and Forel machinery and integrated glass processing lines.
The engineer will work closely with online support centres and technical experts from our machinery providers to deliver technical expertise in troubleshooting, and process improvement, while supporting production teams to achieve operational excellence.
It is also pivotal in enhancing manufacturing processes, focusing on efficiency, cost reduction, and overall process optimization.
Deep dive into existing production workflows to identify areas for improvement, leveraging data analysis, and lean manufacturing principles.
Work and implement projects that enhance production efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing facilities.
To succeed in this role, you will have the following :
Tertiary qualification, preferably in software engineering or alternatively, at least 5 years' experience actively using and maintaining production systems, degree or Diploma in Electrical / Mechatronics / Automation Engineering (or equivalent).
Electrical registration or Limited Electrical registration with EWRB A MUST
Strong knowledge of glass industry automation systems and associated machinery advantageous.
Proficiency in PLC diagnostics (e.g., Siemens, Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley) and HMI / SCADA development.
Proven experience in controls and automation engineering within the glass industry.
Superior communication skills - can work with all walks of life!
Hands-on experience with LISEC systems is essential.
Familiarity with other glass machinery (Glaston, Bystronic, etc.) advantageous.
Demonstrated success in implementing automation upgrades, troubleshooting, and process optimisation.
Knowledge of safety standards (IEC, ISO, AS / NZS, CE marking, machine safeguarding).
Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for electrical / automation faults.
Understanding of servo / motion control, pneumatics, and hydraulics.
Experience with networking, industrial communications (Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet / IP, OPC).
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical documentation.
Strong project management and organisational skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
At least 2 years' experience working with production systems in a manufacturing environment.
A good understanding of production software.
Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to balance production and maintenance needs.
Strong computer skills including the ability to prepare spreadsheets and use Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel) to analyse data and trends.
Solid experience in problem analysis and resolution of software problems.
Proven ability to function in a self-directed environment.
Must excel in a fast-paced, agile environment where critical thinking and strong problem-solving skills are required for success
