Join the New Zealand Customs Service | Te Mana Ārai o Aotearoa as Principal Advisor Operational Policy and help shape how we implement a significant regulatory change. This is a great opportunity to work on a nationally significant regulatory reform project in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment.

As Principal Advisor Operational Policy, you'll be part of the project implementation team, translating regulatory intent into clear, consistent operational policy. You'll work closely with teams across Customs to ensure our frontline staff have the tools and guidance they need to deliver on our regulatory obligations.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the development and implementation of operational policy initiatives
  • Providing expert advice to ensure alignment with regulatory reform
  • Collaborating with internal stakeholders to ensure policies are practical and consistent
  • Identifying and addressing risks and gaps in operational guidance
  • Supporting the transition from project delivery to business-as-usual
  • Championing continuous improvement and regulatory stewardship.

This is a fixed term contract for 12 months and you will report to theProject Manager.

The salary range for this role is $124,950to $169,050.

  • Extensive experience in operational policy within a regulatory or public sector environment
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Proven ability to translate legislation into clear operational guidance
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to influence and build relationships
  • Experience mentoring others and supporting capability development
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in public policy, law, or a related field.

    Requirements

    To work for the New Zealand Customs Service, you must be able to meet the following requirements :

  • Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident
  • Residing in New Zealand at the time of application
  • Have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years
  • )If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years but have been absent from New Zealand for periods of 6-9 months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries : either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA then you will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.
  • Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test and have a clear Police record.
