Overview
Manager Residence Operations (12 month fixed term role) at Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children. The Korowai Manaaki Youth Justice Residence is a 24 / 7 operation that accommodates 14–19-year-olds awaiting court proceedings or service of a sentence. The role leads day-to-day operations of the largest Residence at Korowai Manaaki and supports tamariki on their pathway to improved futures.
Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Korowai Manaaki residence, ensuring safe, high-performing, compliant operations.
- Manage and coordinate a 24 / 7 operations team, balance workforce across shifts, and implement risk mitigation and management strategies.
- Be on the floor, lead from the front, coach leaders, develop high-performing teams, and address people challenges in real time.
- Make decisions prioritising the wellbeing of staff, rangatahi and tamariki; identify opportunities to improve performance and ensure adherence to policies and standards.
- Embed best-practice models, therapeutic, trauma-informed, and care-centric approaches into everyday operating practices.
- Respond to incidents and coordinate timely and effective responses in a dynamic, high-risk environment.
- Engage with tangata whenua and apply Māori restorative approaches where appropriate.

Demonstrated track record of leading from the front in dynamic environments, with experience in developing and coaching leaders and creating high-performing teams.Experience in managing operations in high-risk and complex environments, ideally in social services, justice or health sectors.Ability to work on the floor, roll up sleeves, and ensure smooth operation of residence units.Strong decision-making skills to prioritise safety and wellbeing; ability to drive continuous improvement and ensure regulatory compliance.Commitment to therapeutic, trauma-informed, care-centric approaches and to Oranga Tamariki’s vision, purpose and values.Willingness to work outside standard 9–5 hours with on-call and weekend components.Knowledge of Māori restorative approaches is essential.How to Apply
