This is an entry level role into the world of human source handling. Prior human source handling experience is not required.

Human Intelligence (HUMINT) is a vital intelligence stream that supports Government\'s commitment to addressing the harms caused by the importation of illicit drugs, the growing threat of TSOC, and Trusted Insiders.
As part of New Zealand Customs Service, the Human Source Unit (HSU) manages covert relationships to gather intelligence that helps us understand and target cross-border crime. People skills are essential to this work because we gather our information through the relationships we form and the trust that we build.
We\'re looking for someone who is passionate about protecting New Zealand\'s border by developing relationships from a range of Human Intelligence Sources to produce highly impactful intelligence. This role requires a high level of resilience and proactivity along with a strong ability to manage relationships.
You will be required to work unpredictable hours alongside your team on occasion. This may include working long hours and weekends, both in Auckland and out of town.
If you successfully pass all stages of the recruitment process for this role and are offered a position, you will be required to attend and complete a 7.5-week Customs level 1 HUMINT course that will commence in February 2026. This is a pass or fail course. Your employment will be subject to the successful completion of the 7.5-week course which is critical for you to safely deploy as a Human Source Handler. If you are unable to pass any of the key assessment modules, your employment with Customs will be terminated and you will be given four weeks\' pay in lieu of notice.
Salary
The salary band for this role is $67,745 - $86,742 plus an annual allowance of $16,286 for working flexible hours.

Already having a Top Secret clearance is a benefit, but not a requirement. We\'ll guide you through the process. You will also be asked to complete a medical check, drug screening and a physical fitness test.
