About the roleJoin a unique team working with one of the largest international conservation treaties in the world – The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
CITES Rangers work with species and items that very few people would otherwise encounter in New Zealand, while playing a meaningful role in the conservation of species in the wild.As a CITES Ranger, you'll assist in the monitoring and regulation of the trade of CITES-listed species across New Zealand's border.
You'll help process these items, respond to public queries about the international trade of CITES specimens, process CITES permit applications, input data within required timeframes, and file documentation relating to the overall enforcement of CITES in New Zealand.
You'll work closely with other members of our nationally distributed team to undertake day-to-day CITES duties, focusing on ensuring legal and illegal trade data is accurate, up-to-date and available to report to the CITES Secretariat each year.This largely data entry role is full-time and based in Auckland CBD, until December 2026.Click here for the Role Description
Skills and experienceThis role will suit a recent university graduate with a science background and is computer savvy.If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you : Experience undertaking administrative tasks / case work with high attention to detail; including the ability to maintain confidentialityCan demonstrate experience of approaching work tasks in an organised, methodical and flexible way, including prioritising competing activitiesExperience following processes within a work environmentExperience working within a team environment and working with external stakeholders, maintaining positive collaboration whilst taking a firm approach where requiredA full New Zealand driver's licence and willingness to occasionally drive cars from the Department's fleet (the majority of which are electric) is essentialDesirable : Skills or courses on data entry and Microsoft ExcelBackground in biological science (or relevant sub-discipline)Previous experience in a regulatory or compliance environment and / or knowledge of the border sector is advantageousThe successful applicant must be able to gain and maintain an Aviation Security Service clearance to work at relevant border locations.
