Overview

Permanent full time Park Ranger based at Te Rau Puriri (South Head) and Muriwai Regional Parks, with potential to support operations across the wider Western sector, including Waitākere Ranges. There is also the possibility of on-site accommodation at Te Rau Puriri, subject to negotiation.

Based at Auckland’s Western Regional Parks

A clean NZ driving licence essential

Variable roster so must be available on weekends and public holidays

Responsibilities

This role involves a variety of hands-on and people-focused tasks. You’ll be responsible for managing and supporting volunteers and external stakeholders, liaising with visitors at campgrounds and arrival areas, and performing general park maintenance to ensure a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all.

• Assisting with farming operations where required
• Leading conservation efforts at Te Rau Puriri
• Overseeing and auditing contractors
• Supporting historic site protection programmes
• Conducting and overseeing recreational asset maintenance and inspections

You’ll have the opportunity to make a real difference in protecting these regional taonga for future generations, while contributing to the ongoing development of these spaces to reflect the recreational, conservational, and intrinsic values of the people of Tāmaki Makaurau.

These parks showcase the iconic landscapes of the region and are home to many rare and threatened ecosystems and native species. For many, they are places of inspiration and identity—spaces to find tranquillity and connection with nature, or to enjoy active recreation in the bush or on the beach.

Qualifications and qualities

To be successful in this role, you’ll have a passion for the natural environment and for connecting people with nature. You’ll be a strong communicator who thrives on planning and prioritising your own workday, while still being an integral part of a tight-knit team. A ‘can-do’ attitude, along with being proactive, approachable, and motivated, will set you apart.

Availability to work weekends, public holidays, and on-call shifts as part of a 1-in-3 rotating roster is required.
