Senior Legal Counsel (12-Month Fixed Term Contract)

We are seeking a Senior Lawyer on a 12-month fixed term opportunity. This role will involve complex and demanding litigation and regulatory matters and range from high profile matters to smaller yet equally important issues.

Reporting to the Head of Litigation and Disputes, you will partner with stakeholders to provide high quality legal advice to business units across ASB on complex and interesting matters.

Your day will traverse regulatory issues, civil proceedings, technology, and compliance, and you enjoy the opportunity to be involved in some ground-breaking cases on a wide variety of issues. You will provide effective legal advice to a range of stakeholders including the ELT and Board on a wide range of issues with particular focus on general commercial litigation and regulator engagement.

• At least 10 years good quality experience of complex litigation matters or relevant practice areas.
• Admitted to practice law in New Zealand and holding (or eligible to hold) a New Zealand practising certificate.
• Financial services experience is desirable, but not crucial
• Inhouse experience preferred
• Ability to work autonomously with support and to provide guidance to more junior staff as appropriate
• Sound understanding of conduct and reputation requirements
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A tertiary qualification in law.
• A commitment to appropriate professional and personal self-development.
