Overview
Key role leading operational and maintenance engineering for primary assets NZ wide. Work across Transpower and with our contracted service providers. Transpower owns and operates New Zealand's National Grid, the transmission network that connects areas of generation with towns and cities across the country. Our Grid Delivery division leads project and maintenance work across the transmission network with contracted service providers.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of seven specialists, including Principal Engineers
- Provide real-time operational engineering advice and recommendations for managing operational issues for primary assets
- Develop and manage maintenance strategies and procedures; undertake technical investigations to ensure assets meet performance criteria
- Develop and review maintenance procedures and specifications; support service delivery through technical management, on-site build and commissioning support
- Provide insights on asset health and capability to other business functions
- Collaborate with Transpower National Grid Operations Centres, Regional Service Managers, Asset Planning, and contracted service providers
- Ensure operational performance of HVAC substation assets across ~173 substations nation-wide, including transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, Air Break Switches, and gas-insulated switchgear

Outstanding technical and people leadership skills, underpinned by a relevant tertiary engineering qualification and well-developed systems thinkingAbility to make decisive calls based on available information about asset readiness for return to serviceExperience in high voltage primary assets (substations) engineering; understanding of asset criticality for service deliveryExposure to site risks, safety, quality assurance and improvement, reliability management, and commercial / service provider relationshipsHighly effective written and verbal communication and relationship management, including advocacy and influencing to achieve resultsContinuous improvement of service delivery performance, with knowledge of asset management principlesCPEng or international equivalent is desirable but not essentialShortlisting criteria
Leadership experience including team and capability development, driving continuous improvement, coaching technical specialists; on-call roster roughly one week in sixHV primary assets (substations) engineering experience and understanding of asset criticalityExperience with site risks, safety, quality, reliability, and service provider managementStrong written / verbal communication and relationship managementCommitment to safety, quality, risk mitigation and commercial outcomesIdeally hold or pursue CPEng or international equivalentWhy Transpower
