Senior Policy and Negotiations Advisor (6000 / 42002)

Salary : $96,185.00 - $128,912.00 pro‑rata

Employment type : Fixed Term / Secondment – 12 months (Wellington or Christchurch)

Key focus : Shape conservation policy and support conservation law reform to build enduring partnerships with tangata whenua.

Key responsibilities

• Develop policy solutions that support conservation law reform and enable PSGEs to realise settlement outcomes.
• Develop and implement robust Treaty negotiation strategies, analysing risks, technical feasibility and policy ramifications.
• Analyse a wide range of information to produce practical, pragmatic advice to senior leaders and Ministers on complex issues, negotiation strategies, risk assessments and policy implications.
• Represent DOC and advocate for conservation interests at meetings with iwi and Crown agencies.
• Build and sustain collaborative relationships with internal teams, iwi, PSGEs and government stakeholders to achieve settlement goals.

About the team

The Treaty Negotiations and Land Directorate supports DOC’s input into the Crown’s negotiation and delivery of Treaty of Waitangi settlements. In this role, you will be part of a team that works with our Treaty Negotiations, Policy and Regulatory Services teams to provide critical input into Conservation Law reform. Our immediate focus is to support PSGEs in understanding the relationship between conservation law reform and Treaty of Waitangi settlement, and to support the development and embedding of DOC’s Treaty Settlement system.
