Tenei turanga - About the Role
The Operational Policy team is a shared service within the Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery Group (TWSD) – the operational arm of MBIE.
We work with a range of teams within TWSD and across MBIE on a wide variety of interesting projects.
Our work spans across the operational policy spectrum, from regulatory change to supporting implementation of legislation.
This means that you will get exposure to a range of projects, from machinery of government processes, such as fees reviews, Budget bids and omnibus Bills, through to the design and development of services for New Zealanders.
The successful applicant will have solid policy and analytical skills, and an enthusiasm for understanding regulatory systems.
As a Senior Advisor, you will work with autonomy in a collaborative and collegial team, building strong relationships and leading others to deliver complex projects.
Some recent examples of our work include
Establishing the New Zealand Claims Resolution Service in response to the Earthquake Commission Inquiry.
Reviewing the fees for the Motor Vehicle Traders and Plant Variety Rights regimes.
Developing an internal compliance approach for the Unit Titles regulatory system.

Deploys policy skills to analyse complex problems and generate workable solutions.
Experience in scoping and leading the delivery of complex projects.
Uses project management skills to support effective and timely project delivery.
Comfortable in managing ambiguity successfully to identify a path forward, and takes a proactive approach to problem solving.
Excellent relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills.
Experience in coaching, supporting and mentoring to build team capability.
Can successfully navigate machinery of government processes, and has an understanding of regulatory frameworks.
Delivers clear, concise advice tailored to the target audience.
Welcomes and provides feedback and eager to learn and grow.
