About the Role

The Operational Policy team is a shared service within the Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery Group (TWSD), the operational arm of MBIE. We collaborate with teams across TWSD and across MBIE on a wide variety of interesting projects. Our work spans the operational policy spectrum, from regulatory change to supporting the implementation of legislation. You will get exposure to projects such as fees reviews, budget bids, omnibus Bills, and the design and development of services for New Zealanders.

As a Senior Advisor you will work autonomously in a collaborative and collegial team, building strong relationships and leading others to deliver complex projects.

Responsibilities

  • Deploy policy skills to analyse complex problems and generate workable solutions.
  • Scope and lead the delivery of complex projects.
  • Use project‑management skills to support effective and timely delivery.
  • Navigate ambiguity successfully to identify a path forward and take pro‑active approaches to problem‑solving.
  • Maintain excellent relationship management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Co‑coach, support and mentor team members to build capability.
  • Navigate machinery of government processes and understand regulatory frameworks.
  • Deliver clear, concise advice tailored to the target audience.
  • Welcome feedback, learn and grow continuously.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Solid policy and analytical skills with enthusiasm for regulatory systems.
  • Experience in scoping and leading the delivery of complex projects.
  • Project‑management experience to support effective and timely delivery.
  • Comfortable managing ambiguity and taking proactive problem‑solving initiatives.
  • Excellent relationship management and stakeholder engagement.
  • Experience coaching, supporting and mentoring to build team capability.
  • Understanding of regulatory frameworks and machinery of government processes.
  • Ability to deliver clear, concise, audience‑tailored advice.
  • Eagerness to learn, grow and provide feedback.
