The Apparel Designer plays a key role in conceptualising and designing product ranges aligned to the category, consumer, and marketplace needs for the Global Canterbury of New Zealand business. You’ll turn insights, trend signals and Canterbury of New Zealand DNA into commercially sharp, technically robust product.
Responsibilities
- Own seasonal collections from concept to handover : mood boards, colour / material direction, sketches, line plans, and tech packs.
- Design across key categories : Performance, Sportswear, Lifestyle, Outerwear, Base layer, Accessories.
- Engineer performance : informed paneling, ventilation mapping, articulation, ergonomic grading; specify stitches, seams and finishes fit for purpose.
- Select & brief materials : knits / wovens, meshes, compression fabrics; moisture-wicking, DWR, quick-dry, anti-odour, UV, 4-way stretch, bonded / seam-sealed constructions.
- Apply graphics & trims suited to sportswear : heat‑transfer, silicone / TPU, high‑build, reflective, sublimation, embroidery and applique with clear placement / scale logic.
- Support through sampling : support development through revisions and fit sessions.
- Partner cross‑functionally : Product Development, Graphics, Materials, Sourcing, Merch, and Brand to hit milestones, cost targets and channel needs.
- Safeguard brand identity : ensure consistency of marks, typography, colour systems and storytelling across the line.
- Design for manufacturability & margin : simplify parts, optimise yield, choose finishes that scale without compromising contribution.
- Deliver clean documentation : bullet‑proof tech packs (callouts, measurements, construction), graded specs, artwork files and label sheets in PLM.
Qualifications & Experience
3–6 years’ apparel design experience; performance / sportswear / lifestyle background strongly preferred.Portfolio that proves problem‑solving (not just aesthetics) : pattern logic, articulation, and wear‑test feedback turned into design decisions.Fluent in Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop; competent in CLO 3D; comfortable in PLM software.Working knowledge of factory methods : bonding, ultrasonic, taping, bartacks, coverstitch, flatlock; tolerance setting and QC literacy.Organised, deadline‑driven, comfortable with range plan constraints and adaptable to late changes.Strong knowledge of international market trends with an ability to balance originality and innovation.Strong character, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present and influence groups.Collaborative team player with a strong sense of responsibility.Proactive, flexible, and solutions‑focused with a positive ‘can‑do’ attitude.Professional, confident, and articulate.Benefits
