Job description

Transpower holds a unique position in the New Zealand energy sector as both National Grid owner and System Operator.

Our core purpose is toempower the energy future for New Zealand- a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable and secure electricity system.

At the heart of the energy sector for over a hundred years, the grid has moved power from where it's made to where it's needed.

We'll keep doing that - maintaining and operating the national network and prioritising a reliable, safe supply of electricity - but our context has changed, and we're changing with it.

What we do matters more than ever, because our work is vital to New Zealand's economic growth and future prosperity.

The transition to electrification is underway, and at Transpower we're ensuring the grid can support it and meet Kiwis' needs into the future.

We're also working at pace with our customers to deliver new grid connections that bring more renewable energy into the network, powering homes and businesses everywhere.

At the same time, we're managing the system - coordinating supply and demand for electricity 24 / 7 in real-time - so that whenever you plug something in, the power is there to keep your world running.

The opportunity - a new role to support a more strategic approach

As one of two Principal Advisors, you'll take on diverse mahi as you :

Collaborate with the Head of Communications and team members to drive strategic communications planning and execution

Provide expert leadership on communication issues and share your knowledge with the team

Develop and implement key communication plans and strategies (internal and external)

Personally follow through and deliver on strategies and plans, ensuring you meet meaningful and measurable outcomes

Work cross-functionally to inspire, support, and encourage effective communication across the business.

What sets this role apart?

Working closely with the Head of Communications, and as a trusted partner to our Executive General Managers and their teams, you'll thrive in a collaboratively, fast-paced environment, delivering high-quality internal and external communications - from strategies and planning through to implementation.

It's dynamic and intellectually challenging work in a regulated, critical, and rapidly growing sector.

With a clear sense of purpose and direction, there is no shortage of meaningful work to be done.

What you'll bring

Five or more years' experience in a principal communications role or equivalent

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, meaningful content

Extensive experience in planning and executing communication strategies, including internal communications

Strong leadership skills and a collaborative approach.

While this role has no direct reports, you'll lead through influence every day

A proactive approach with the ability to identify and implement new tools and practices that enhance communication effectiveness

A relevant tertiary qualification in communications, public relations, or a related field.
