Principal Project Engineer - Track

Auckland Central, New Zealand / Wellington, New Zealand

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join our New Zealand Rail team. Based in Auckland or Wellington , you will lead the design and project management of a variety of rail infrastructure projects—including track renewals, depots and stabling yards, stations , and other key assets. With a strong background in track design , you will be responsible for coordinating design deliverables, integrating international inputs, and overseeing project execution.

Our portfolio ranges from bespoke design commissions to some of the largest infrastructure projects in New Zealand and globally .

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver assigned tasks to meet quality standards, timelines, and budget requirements
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop design solutions that meet client needs and comply with regulatory standards
• Ensure adherence to industry standards and safety regulations, including Safety in Design principles
• Lead the development of concept designs, technical solutions, specifications, and cost estimates
• Ensure all work aligns with Mott MacDonald’s quality assurance procedures
• Provide technical mentorship to team members, particularly in track design and asset management
• Promote a “right-first-time” delivery culture and support Project Managers in achieving successful outcomes
• Stay current with industry standards, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes

You’ll also provide technical leadership within the Rail team while continuing to grow through our development and training programs.
