Lead Engineer, IOT Embedded System, MedTech CatapultAgency for Science, Technology and Research – QueenstownMedTech Catapult is a national initiative for accelerating the development of high-value MedTech projects through an in-house product engineering unit.
This productization unit is responsible for supporting the development of technologies through the medical device development cycle to produce full-fledged hardware product systems.
The Lead Engineer will report to the Lead, Product Engineering.ResponsibilitiesLead the design and development of integrated hardware and firmware solutions for innovative medical devices.Drive embedded system architecture, firmware development, and electronics design to meet product requirements.Translate or decompose product requirements to lower-level embedded subsystem requirements.Develop control systems, PCBs, and embedded software to support both prototype and production phases.Collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams to achieve optimized, manufacturable product designs.Conduct system integration, testing, debugging, and validation of hardware and software components.Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and regulatory compliance activities (e.g., IEC, ISO standards).
Support the development of intellectual property in device design and technology know-how.Prepare and maintain clear technical documentation in line with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 13485).
Engage with external partners, vendors, and suppliers as needed to define specifications and ensure project success.Support other engineering or product development activities as required.RequirementsDegree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics, Computer Science, or a related field. At least 8-10 years of relevant experience in embedded systems, electronic design, or hardware-software integration.Proven experience with ARM microcontrollers, RTOS, low-level driver development, single-board computer and Linux system.Hands-on experience with analog / digital circuit design and schematic capture.Familiar with wireless protocols (e.g. BLE, WiFi) and sensor integration (temperature, pressure, motion, CMOS, etc).
Good understanding of networking (e.g TCP / IP, DHCP, HTTPs) and edge / cloud integration (MQTT, REST APIs).
Basic understanding of security best practices in IoT and server environments.Knowledge of relevant medical device standards (e.g., ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601-1, IEC 62304) is an advantage.Experience with system integration, testing, and debugging.Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
