- The Ministry of Health - Manatu Hauora (the Ministry) is seeking candidates who wish to be considered for appointment as members of the Radiation Safety Advisory Council (the Council), established under the (the Act).
The purpose of the Act is to protect the health and safety of people and protect the environment from the harmful effects of ionising radiation while allowing for the safe and beneficial use of ionising radiation.
The Act also enables New Zealand to meet its international obligations relating to radiation protection, radiation safety and security, and nuclear-non-proliferation.
Candidates for two vacancies are being sought with a view to appointing at least one lay member.
About the role - Korero mo te turangaThe Council is an advisory group established under of the Act.Being a member of the Council is rewarding and challenging.
You will be committed to protecting the health and safety of New Zealanders and protecting the environment through your contribution to the Council's legislative requirements.
The functions of the Council are set out under of the Act which are :
to provide advice to the Director for Radiation Safety (the Director) and the Minister of Health (the Minister) on general matters relating to or affecting radiation safety and standards relating to radiation safetyto advise and make recommendations to- + the Minister on the exercise of the Minister's powers under this Act + the Director on the adoption of recommendations, policies, codes of practice, and standards relating to radiation safety + the Director in respect of authorisations referred to it by the Director; andto provide advice as requested on any matter relating to radiation safety referred to it by the Minister, the Director-General of Health, or the Director.More information about the Council is available in the and .Appointments to the Council are made by the Minister or their delegate, typically for terms of three years.

About you - Korero mouUnder section 80 of the Act, the Council must be made up of members with :appropriate knowledge, expertise or interest in radiation and nuclear safety,appropriate knowledge and experience in the use of radiation and radiation sources,and lay members.In this instance, we are particularly looking to receive applications from candidates that can participate as a lay member or have knowledge, expertise or interest in naturally occurring radioactive material and its implications for the mining and extraction industries.The Council is seeking candidates who have experience or knowledge in the following :
naturally occurring radioactive material, mining, or regulation in this area.use of radioactive material or irradiating apparatus in a non-medical setting e.g. Research / teaching, veterinary, engineering or industry.An understanding of international standards and guidelines in radiation protection particularly those standards established by the International Radiation Protection or the International Atomic Energy Agency.Eligible radiation experts must fit the criteria listed above.Successful lay member candidates will ideally have experience in regulation, law, ethics, management or research, or will be able to provide perspectives for patients, populations groups, the environment or Maori.
The ideal candidates will also have :
