About Hato Hone St John

Hato Hone St John has been serving New Zealanders since 1885. Today, our 11,000‑strong team of kaimahi and volunteers works across Aotearoa to enhance the health and wellbeing of our communities. From responding to 111 calls to supporting people to stay healthy through our mahi in health education, access, and monitoring, we are making life‑changing differences every day.

About the role

As part of a new initiative, we have an exciting opportunity for registered healthcare professionals to join our Clinical Hub. As a Secondary Triage Clinician, you’ll work alongside a talented team of Clinical Support Officers to deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred care. In this pivotal role, you’ll conduct secondary triage and provide timely clinical advice and support via telephone and digital platforms. This role can be based at our Integrated Operations Centres in Auckland or Christchurch. Standard hours are rostered 8‑hour shifts, Monday to Sunday, between 7 : 00 am and 11 : 00 pm, with some flexibility to extend as service demand requires. This is a great opportunity to use your clinical expertise in a dynamic and supportive environment, helping ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.

Key responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively within the Integrated Operations Centre environment to offer clinical advice and guidance to patients, with an overall focus on achieving the best possible outcome for the patient.
  • Conduct secondary triage assessments for patients.
  • Utilise evidence‑based triage protocols and clinical judgement to determine the urgency and appropriate level of care required.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and health professionals to assess symptoms, provide health advice, and support self‑care when appropriate.
  • Return incidents to dispatch queue with appropriate emergency ambulance response.
  • Document clinical interactions accurately and timely in electronic health records or designated triage platforms.

Qualifications

  • A registered New Zealand healthcare professional with a relevant APC (Nurse, Paramedic) with a minimum of 2 years of clinical experience, with triage, emergency, primary care, or telehealth experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise with the ability to apply sound clinical judgment in complex situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and confidently.
  • Proactive and self‑motivated, with the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team environment.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision‑making skills, ensuring safe and appropriate patient outcomes.
  • Confident using clinical decision support tools and electronic health systems to inform and document care.
  • How to apply

Click "I’m interested" before applications close on Sunday 7 December 2025. For further information please contact Melanie Johnson, Recruiter, or 0275  for a confidential discussion.

At Hato Hone St John, we embrace diversity, welcoming everyone to bring their authentic selves to work. We value unique perspectives, fostering inclusivity to better serve our communities, and we’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone belongs.

If you need accommodations for accessibility, please reach out to the recruiter listed for equitable participation in our recruitment process.

Research shows that women and people from under‑represented groups are less likely to apply for roles when their experience doesn’t match the job description perfectly. If you’re excited and think you have what it takes, we want to hear from you! Even if your experience doesn’t align 100 %, please apply or contact the recruitment advisor listed on the advertisement for a kōrero.
