Overview

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) invites applications for the role of Head of Department, Midwifery (School of Acute & Primary Health), AUT South Campus. This is a senior academic appointment with leadership responsibility within the Department of Midwifery, the largest midwifery educator, researcher and postgraduate provider in New Zealand. AUT is a socially-driven university with equity and excellence central to its purpose and actions, offering a stimulating teaching and research environment with strong connections to government, business and industry. The Department focuses on high-quality education and Midwifery research and embeds Te Tiriti o Waitangi in all activities and curriculum alignment with AUT’s Te Tiriti framework (Te Aronui).

Key Focus Areas

  • Embrace AUT's Te Aronui framework and operate as a Te Tiriti o Waitangi-led organisation.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the Department of Midwifery.
  • Lead the development of a department culture focused on excellence in teaching, research, service and other academic contributions while ensuring staff feel safe and productive.
  • Continue to develop and implement academic programs that meet industry standards and student needs.
  • Foster strong relationships with community, health agencies, tangata whenua and other key stakeholders to ensure curriculum relevance and career opportunities.
  • Lead, mentor, and motivate academic and administrative staff to achieve department objectives.

The Opportunity

The Department of Midwifery is seeking an experienced midwife and senior academic with leadership experience to enable excellence and equity in education and research. You will contribute to academic programme development, research capability and capacity, and create space for innovative thinking in response to sector and student needs. You will be recognised as a culturally capable leader who champions inclusivity and diversity, and is committed to creativity and innovation. Your ability to listen, connect, collaborate, communicate and influence will be critical, alongside a resolute, robust and positive attitude.

  • significant experience leading strategic change with understanding of cultural, operational and organisational change management;

  • Further Information

  • Start Date : Early-2026 (to be agreed with the successful candidate).
  • Term : 3-year secondment to Head of Department with potential for further extension and a permanent appointment as a senior academic.
  • Salary : AUT pay scales (Senior Lecturer : NZD 109,051–128,559; Associate Professor : 142,835–165,369; Professor : 156,354–201,425). An annual allowance is paid for Head of Department responsibilities.
