Due to the retirement of a long-serving head of department, we are seeking an inspirational science leader to head our dynamic department and drive excellence in teaching and learning.

Glenfield College is a co-educational secondary school located on Auckland’s North Shore, known for its inclusive community, strong academic focus, and commitment to student wellbeing.

The role

The successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership and strategic development of science education across junior and senior levels, including NCEA. This is a key middle leadership role within the school and a fantastic opportunity to shape a progressive and supportive learning environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead planning and implementation of a knowledge-rich curriculum across all science disciplines (biology, chemistry, physics, junior science)
  • Inspire and support a team of science teachers through collaborative leadership and professional development that supports evidence-informed teaching practices
  • Oversee assessment practices, tracking of student progress, and use of data to inform teaching
  • Foster a culture of intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and scholarly rigour in science education
  • Ensure alignment with NCEA and Ministry of Education guidelines
  • Collaborate with SLT to support whole-school initiatives and student achievement
  • Involvement in our schoolwide mentoring programme and co-curricular aspects of the school.

What we’re looking for

  • NZ registered teacher with the right to live / work in NZ
  • Proven experience in teaching science at senior levels, including NCEA Level 3
  • Leadership experience (HoD, TIC, or similar) or strong readiness to take the next step
  • Strong understanding of curriculum and assessment frameworks
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • A commitment to inclusive and culturally responsive practice, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.
  • Start date is term 1, 2026.
