Job description

Senior Programme Analyst

Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, New Zealand

Wellington-based | Permanent, Full-time | Two roles available

Help turn data and analysis into action for New Zealand.

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) supports the Prime Minister and Cabinet to make well‑informed decisions and deliver results for New Zealanders. Within DPMC, the Delivery Unit plays a central role in assessing how effectively key Government priorities are being delivered, providing insights and advice that support better performance across the public sector.

About The Role

As a Senior Programme Analyst, you'll bring together evidence, analysis and judgement to help track and improve the delivery of Government priorities. You'll contribute to the reports and insights that go to the heart of decision‑making — informing Ministers, senior leaders, and agencies on what's working, what's not, and where focus is needed.

In this role you will

  • Analyse progress, risks, and delivery challenges for Government priorities and targets.
  • Prepare concise and insightful reporting for senior decision-makers, including the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
  • Work closely with policy and analytical colleagues across DPMC and government agencies to gather evidence and ensure a shared understanding of performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve how delivery performance is tracked, analysed, and communicated.

About You

You'll be an experienced analyst with strong policy awareness and the ability to draw meaningful insights from complex information. You will bring

  • 5+ years' experience in analytical, policy, or performance reporting roles, ideally within government.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to interpret data and qualitative evidence.
  • Excellent written communication and the ability to present insights clearly and persuasively to senior audiences.
  • A collaborative, pragmatic approach and a focus on accuracy, quality, and impact.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. public policy, economics, social science, or business) is preferred. These positions require the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret national security clearance.

You don't need to meet every requirement to be considered. We're looking for people with the right mix of skills, judgement, and personal qualities to strengthen our team. If this role sounds like a good fit for you, we'd love to hear from you.

We will be reviewing applications as they are received and may progress suitable candidates before the closing date. Therefore, please apply as soon as possible if you are interested in this position.

    Why Join Us?

At DPMC, you'll work at the centre of government, helping to improve how major priorities are delivered for Aotearoa New Zealand. You'll be part of a small, capable team where your analysis directly informs decision‑making at the highest level.

    How to Apply

A full job description is available below. If this role is of interest, please click 'Apply now' and submit your tailored Cover Letter and CV. All applications must be made online.

In your cover letter we'd like to know

  • about you, your values, your whakapapa
  • explain your interests and motivations for this role
  • describe your skills and personal attributes you will bring to the team and DPMC.
  • All applications must be made online. The closing date for this role is 8pm Monday 3 November 2025.

DPMC is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Applicants from all backgrounds are warmly encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have the ability to obtain and maintain the legal right to work in New Zealand.

Prior to DPMC confirming any offer of employment, pre‑employment checks will be undertaken including criminal conviction history and reference checking as a minimum.
