What You'll Do

As a Senior Analyst, you'll have the chance to :

  • Deliver well‑researched, high‑quality advice on significant policy matters that influence the living standards of New Zealanders, including preparing Cabinet Papers and other key documents.
  • Enhance your political awareness by shaping and influencing policy priorities, with opportunities to work directly with Ministers and senior officials.
  • Develop strong relationship management skills by collaborating with other Government agencies, external stakeholders, and Treasury teams to achieve impactful policy outcomes.
  • Bring intellectual leadership and curiosity to policy discussions, offering innovative ideas and fresh perspectives.
  • Grow professionally through customised training, challenging assignments, and a focus on personal development.
  • Demonstrate leadership by coaching and mentoring less experienced staff, contributing to work planning and helping set the Treasury's policy agenda.
  • Contribute to cross‑agency and cross‑Treasury projects, ensuring alignment with broader government priorities and fostering collaboration across the organisation and the wider public service.

Areas To Apply Your Skills

At the Treasury, we have opportunities to utilise your expertise in areas such as :

  • Economic and Fiscal Policy Advice – Contribute to shaping the policy agenda as the Government's lead economic and financial policy advisor.
  • Analytics and Forecasting – Use your quantitative and modelling skills to inform policy decisions and analytical work.
  • Regulatory or Legislative Public Policy – Apply your knowledge of institutional economics, governance, or Parliamentary processes to public policy.
  • Corporate Finance and Organisational Performance – Provide strategic advice to improve the performance and value of Crown‑owned entities.
  • Economic Strategy, Māori Economy, and Economic Development – Promote inclusive and sustainable growth by advancing opportunities for Māori and supporting broader economic development initiatives.
  • Climate, Energy and Resource Policy – Help shape New Zealand's response to climate change, energy and resource management challenges by developing policies that support a low‑emissions economy, efficient and resilient energy markets and sustainable resource use.

    • Ō Pūmanawa | About You

    To succeed in this role, you'll bring :

  • A minimum of 6 years' experience in policy advice or related analytical fields, with a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Economics, Finance, Public Policy, Law, or Social Sciences.
  • Strong analytical, critical, and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and complexity to deliver practical advice.
  • Proven experience in developing public policy advice, including applying policy frameworks, analysing issues, and producing actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences, including Ministers.
  • A strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in policy development to ensure equitable outcomes for all New Zealanders.
  • The ability to build and maintain professional relationships to deliver impactful policy solutions.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a commitment to manaakitanga, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.

    • The salary range for this role is $128,515 - $173,873 and appointment will be based on skills and experience.
