Overview
Located in Warkworth, just north of Auckland, Southern Paprika Limited (today known as SPL) is New Zealand’s largest single-site glasshouse operation and one of the country’s leading producers of hothouse vegetables. We operate 26 hectares of modern glasshouses on an 86-hectare site, growing primarily capsicums, alongside a smaller volume of snacking cucumbers. In 2023, SPL became a wholly owned subsidiary of Market Gardeners Limited (MG Group).

THE ROLE :
We are seeking a Trainee Complex Manager to assist in supervising Glasshouse activities on a day-to-day basis to meet production targets, ensure safe work practices and to undertake activities prescribed by the General Operations Manager and Glasshouse Manager to ensure crop health and efficient coordination of staff.
Responsibilities
- Liaising with Glasshouse Manager regarding fruit picking requirements daily.
- Effective delegation of staff and managing Glasshouse Workers to complete daily tasks of picking and twisting & pruning.
- Meet quality standards and timeframes with minimal downtime and ensure accurate recording of data using our BumperCrop / Priva software.
- Staff management of the annual pullout and replant of our capsicum crop in the complex.
- Regular training, development, and performance management of staff.
- Regular complex walks with SPL Growers to examine plants and learn about basic growing plans for the complex including climate control, root health / disease, production levels, plant balance, chemical recommendations, Irrigation strategy and variety recommendations.
- Work with SPL Pest & Disease team who complete spraying, monitoring, and pest & disease management activities for the complex, ensuring quality enhancement of the crop.
- Ensure ongoing maintenance of the glasshouse complex and equipment is identified and fixed by the maintenance team to alleviate any downtime.
- Understanding of health & safety and safe food handling practices, leading by example in the workplace.
- Be part of the management team involved in exciting future growth and changes, helping to manage relevant additional projects along the way.
Skills & Experience
Supervisory horticultural experience or relevant tertiary qualification in horticulture or a related field would be helpful, or be ready to take a step into a management roleAbility to be flexible with working hours to meet demands of peak production and work cycles, including some weekend work and statutory holidaysGrowsafe Certified with a current Forklift License would be advantageous however training can be providedAble to cope within a hot and humid environmentSelf-motivation and willingness to motivate othersKeen to learn, a practical thinker, and shows initiativeWhat\'s in it for you?
