Our client is in the midst of a company-wide transformation, overhauling its core systems and building a world-class, cutting-edge data platform.

They are making a strategic shift from traditional ETL development to modern data engineering practices on Azure and Databricks.

To accelerate this journey, they need a senior contractor to join the leadership team, provide architectural direction, and help execute their ambitious data and AI strategy.

This project is critical to their success and touches every part of the business, from optimising energy generation and trading to enhancing retail customer value.

Your Role

Reporting directly to the data leader, you will not be tied to a single squad.

Instead, you'll work across the programme to :

Act as a thought leader, creating concept designs and providing solutions for gaps in the current platform.

Help build a new, innovative team by establishing modern ways of working and best practices.

Drive the implementation of a new Databricks and mesh platform, working across both greenfield and legacy system migration projects.

Peer-review code and provide mentorship to other engineers.

Remain hands-on, jumping in to write code where needed to support the team and meet delivery goals.

Your Fit

You could be a top-tier Data Engineer, a Tech Lead, or a Data Architect, but the key is that you're not afraid to get your hands dirty.

A high-level, hands-off architect won't work here.

We're looking for :

Deep expertise in modern data platforms, specifically Azure and Databricks.

Proven experience in solutioning, creating designs, and guiding teams on best practices.

A strong background in migrating legacy systems and working on both greenfield and brownfield projects.

The ability to still cut high-quality code and contribute directly to projects when required.

A natural collaborator who can act as a 2IC and work effectively with senior leadership.

Any experience with GenAI would be a significant advantage.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
