Senior Engineer - Transmission System Planning

Job descriptionGrid Connection Study Expertise – experience planning and conducting grid connection studies, generator modelling, load flow, short‑circuit, RMS and EMT simulations. Transmission System Planning Expertise – steady‑state and dynamic analysis, transmission constraints, upgrade options and regulatory compliance. Outstanding communication skills – translate complex engineering into clear, confident insights for technical teams and senior leaders. Tools – hands‑on experience with industry‑standard tools such as DigSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD and PSSE. Industry Knowledge – solid understanding of electricity market operations, regulatory frameworks and the Electricity Industry Participation Code. Python Scripting – automate and enhance load flow modelling and power system analysis workflows. Commercial Savvy – economic assessment of investment options, balancing technical difficulty with commercial outcomes.
Senior Engineer - Transmission System Planning – Transpower New Zealand
Transpower New Zealand is looking for a senior engineer with a deep technical focus on network planning and the integration of new generation assets. In this role you will lead sophisticated studies, shape the future of New Zealand’s electric grid, and drive forward decarbonisation initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Spearhead initiatives for grid planning to support New Zealand’s transition to renewable energy.
- Lead studies for new customer connections, ensuring code compliance, system performance and cost optimisation.
- Collaborate across teams and with external partners to translate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
- Lead power system analysis and develop transmission plans that support the country’s electrification goals.
- Drive groundbreaking decarbonisation efforts, integrating offshore wind, large‑scale data centres and future‑focused planning.
