James Cook High School is a large, co-educational, culturally diverse secondary school located in Manurewa, South Auckland. Our current roll of 1700 students has grown considerably in 2025, with a further predicted roll growth for 2026. Due to retirement, a rare and exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dedicated English team. We are looking for a full-time, permanent Head of Faculty starting 2026.

As a head of faculty English, you will help to lead James Cook High School in the next stage of its development as a high-performing secondary school of choice.

We want our new HoF English to support our English team to build on this success, continue to grow our reputation for educational achievement and deliver on the school’s vision to “develop a safe school culture that provides our community with endless possibilities.” We are seeking an empathetic and passionate individual who can provide authentic and collaborative leadership in an environment that fosters and creates success.

Responsibilities (illustrative)

Lead the English faculty to advance teaching and learning outcomes; contribute to school-wide strategic planning and implementation; promote a safe, inclusive, and high-performing English learning environment; collaborate with staff to build capacity and professional practice; represent the English faculty in school governance and community engagement.

Qualifications and requirements

• Certificated teacher (Secondary, Years 7–15 / wharekura)
• English specialist with endorsements : 3MU + 2MMA
• Experience in leadership or coordination within a school English department is desirable
