Job description

Te Kaunihera aa Takiwaa o Waikato (Waikato District Council) serves a large and diverse area, key towns include Raglan, Huntly, Ngaaruawaahia, Tuakau and Te Kauwhata. Smaller settlements include Gordonton, Matangi, Tamahere, Meremere, Port Waikato and Pookeno.

Our Head Office in Ngaaruawaahia is an open plan hot desking environment, it includes a collab space as well as unique areas to work or meet with colleagues, Waikato River walks and the chance to hit the Hakarimata ranges on your lunch break. We also have an onsite cafeteria, free parking and work-life balance.

The Waikato district and Te Kaunihera aa Takiwaa o Waikato have much to offer. We prioritise the well-being of our employees and have cultivated an environment of hard work, respect, trust, empathy, and support.

About this role :

Are you passionate about shaping vibrant, sustainable communities? Waikato District Council is looking for two Intermediate Consent Planners to join our Consents team. We have one full time fixed term role available for 12 months and one permanent full time role; both 40 hours per week. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to meaningful work that directly impacts the places we live, work, and play.

We're on the lookout for two sharp, solution-focused Intermediate Consent Planners to join our high-performing team. If you're passionate about making great development happen while protecting what matters, this is your chance to do meaningful work every day.

We have two planning positions which are vacant in the Subdivision and Land Use Consents teams. These roles offer a broad and diverse scope of work. Regardless of your primary team, you'll contribute to both areas, gaining exposure to the full planning process. You will play a key role in assessing and processing a wide range of resource consent applications under the Resource Management Act (RMA). The role also includes conducting site visits throughout the district and managing applications from initial assessment through to post-approval stages.

What I do?

  • Assess and report on a diverse range of resource consent applications that are at an intermediate / complex level as well as designations and notices of requirements.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, customers, Legal, Consents, Building Engineering and the wider organisation to provide expert planning advice that aligns with legislation and best practice.
  • Ensuring development aligns with planning regulations and reflects the needs of our growing communities.
  • Manage 223, 224 and clearance applications under the RMA and LGA.
  • Answer queries from internal and external customers sometimes on behalf of team leaders and / or managers.
  • Provide high quality planning advice and mentoring to other planners on matters of professional development and consistency.
  • Contribute to projects that are diverse, challenging, and integral to the sustainable development of our district.
  • Support enforceable consent conditions and proactively identify opportunities for process and customer satisfaction improvement.

What I bring?

  • Minimum of 3 years post graduate work experience under the RMA including local authority statutory planning.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Resource Management or a related field.
  • Eligibility to or member of the NZ Planning Institute.
  • Working knowledge key documents (e.g. District Plans, National Policy Statements, National Environmental Standards).
  • Current full NZ Driver's license.
  • Proactive and responsive Customer Service attitude with a focus on internal and external customer needs.
  • Have an understanding of te ao Māori and tikanga, with a desire to further explore te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Ture Whaimana.
  • Align with our values of "Do It Right" and are committed to ensuring Zero Harm, we'd love to hear from you!
  • Why join our team?

We're a flexible working organisation - yes this means you can work from home, but it's also so much more than that, we encourage our people to work in ways that provide the best outcomes rather than measuring success by time spent at a desk.

Waikato District Council is looking for people who embody our Do It Right values. We need people who aren't afraid of getting stuck in, who can fit right into our innovative and community-focused organisation. The Waikato district needs us to deliver our vision of creating Liveable, Thriving and Connected Communities. Can you help?

    Additional Information

Hours of Work : 1 x full time, permanent 40 hours per week and 1 x full time, fixed term 40 hours per week.

Our Head Office in Ngaaruawaahia is an open plan space that inspires connection with hot desking, no one has a permanent desk.

We have a strong safety culture and as a part of this our preferred candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening which includes alcohol and drug testing.

    Submit your application today!
