The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Senior Structural Engineer (CPEng) to join our Christchurch studio. This role is about more than design — you’ll play a key part in leading projects, mentoring engineers, and shaping buildable, resilient solutions that make a difference. You’ll collaborate with other disciplines, run design reviews at key stages, and support robust project establishment so that delivery is clear, accountable, and efficient.
What You’ll Do
- Lead structural design from concept through construction for new builds, refurbishments, and strengthening projects.
- Take ownership of project deliverables — reports, calculations, drawings, specifications — while coordinating multidisciplinary inputs.
- Prepare and peer review calculations for gravity, lateral, and seismic systems in line with NZ codes and standards.
- Produce / oversee PS1 design producer statements, respond to RFIs, and carry out construction monitoring (PS4).
- Plan and lead design reviews at each project stage to de-risk delivery and uphold quality.
- Mentor, coach, and technically develop intermediate and graduate engineers, ensuring clear guidance and QA.
- Build trusted relationships with clients, architects, and contractors, presenting options and practical advice.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of TMCo’s tools, templates, and standard details.
What You’ll Bring
Bachelor’s or Master’s in Civil Engineering.Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) NZ with structural practice area.8+ years’ consulting experience in New Zealand, delivering building structures across commercial, residential, education, health, or industrial sectors.Strong working knowledge of the NZ Building Code and relevant standards (NZS 1170, NZS 3101, NZS 3404, NZS 3604, assessment / retrofit guidelines).Proven experience with producer statements (PS1 / PS4) and council engagement.Proficiency in analysis / design software (ETABS, SAP2000, SpaceGass, Robot, Microstran, or similar) and experience coordinating in Revit / BIM environments.Clear, confident communication skills and a collaborative, “dive in” work ethic.Nice to Have
Seismic assessment / retrofit experience (IL2–IL4) with practical constructability insight.Temporary works and / or construction methodology input.Experience working across multiple offices or with Australian standards (bonus only).Design of non-structural elements (suspended ceilings and partition walls).Auckland producer statement author (structure).Why TMCo?
