We punch above our weight in leading the way through connecting people with animals, saving animals in the wild and ensuring we're a voice to be heard.About the roleMo te turanga : About the role This is an opportunity for you to be part of a unique and special environment.The Grounds Keeper role works closely with the Manager and Grounds team to keep the general appearance of the Zoo looking it's best throughout the day.
There is a little bit of everything to do from collecting recycling and animal waste; leaf blowing and clearing paths; collecting browse and bamboo for animal diets, and pretty much anything else that needs doing to keep the Zoo in tip-top shape for our visitors.This is a physical, all-weather role working five set days : Tuesday to Saturday from 7 : 30am to 4 : 00pm each day.Ability to do manual labourA good level of fitness (we are on a hill and there is lots of walking)Willing and able to work outside in all weather conditionsLove to start early in the morningCurrent full driver's licence and the ability to drive a manual transmission vehicleAble to be a team player, take responsibility for your work, and follow instructionsWilling to learnComfortable communicating with others – there may be times our visitors and / or other staff need to talk and hear from youLevel-headed and take health and safety seriouslyGood knowledge of the use and care of small machinery, vehicles and tools (is useful not essential)Salary equivalent of $28.95 per hourUniform provided, including boots.Yearly allocation of Zoo passes and Zoo Close Encounter that can be shared with family and friendsSick leave entitlement from when you startAn extra accrued week of annual leave after 5 years continuous serviceA unique working environment – you can enjoy the Zoo every daySupportive and inclusive teamTo be part of a passionate and committed organisation dedicated to animal welfare, sustainability initiatives, community engagement and conservation outcomes.Please note : Successful applicants will need to complete a Ministry of Justice and a Drug and Alcohol Test, all of which we arrange for you through relevant providers.You may be asked to complete a pre-interview phone screen.Applicants for this position need NZ residency or a valid NZ work permit.If you have any support or access requirements, we encourage you to tell us when you apply so we can assist you through the recruitment process.We anticipate interviews taking place the week of 6 October 2026.Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo wants a diverse workforce that reflects Aotearoa New Zealand.
