Join our Digital Forensics Unit, located in one of New Zealand’s four major centres — Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Dunedin — where we play a vital role in supporting criminal investigations through the extraction and analysis of digital devices. This position is central to our mission and offers the opportunity to innovate and develop solutions to the complex challenges of accessing data from modern technology.

In this role, you’ll apply your technical expertise to analyse and manipulate hardware systems, helping investigators access critical information. You’ll be involved in repairing damaged devices, researching emerging tools and techniques, and tackling the evolving challenges posed by mobile phones, IoT devices, and other digital platforms.

We’re looking for someone who’s passionate about technology and driven by innovation. You’ll also can share your knowledge by designing and delivering training to staff across the country, contributing to the growth of digital forensic capability nationwide.

Key Accountabilities :

  • Device Repair – Diagnose and repair damaged or malfunctioning devices.
  • Data Extraction – Research and development of methods to obtain data from electronic devices.
  • Advise and upskill staff in device-level fault diagnosis and repair.

    We’re seeking someone with hands-on experience in repairing and recovering data from damaged or complex devices. This could come from a background in mobile phone repair, electronics design, or a relevant qualification in electrical, mechatronic engineering, or another technology-related field.

    You’ll be confident working with tools and techniques such as :

  • Data storage media and recovery
  • Hardware and software systems
  • Fault diagnosis and repair
  • Micro-soldering, PCB work, and handling data chips
  • Encryption and decryption fundamentals
  • You’re a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills, capable of working independently and as part of a team. Often, there won’t be a manual — you’ll need to develop your own methods to access and repair damaged devices. This is a role where you’ll have the freedom to innovate and make it your own.

  • Successful applicant must reside within commutable distance to one Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Dunedin.

  • Foundation in device repair and data extraction
  • Appropriate degree or experience

    Utu ā-tau | Salary

    This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $102,808 and $108,894 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
