    He angitūtanga | About the role

    Does working across some of Aotearoas most beautiful landscapes, including Lake Taupo, interest you? Are you keen on all things fishing?

    The heart of your role as a Fishery Ranger will be focused on the sustainable management of a world class wild trout recreational fishery. Primarily based in the field, the successful applicant will be in the field for the bulk of their working day, deploying in small teams to conduct all the aspects of providing a quality fishing experience for licence holders. The role demands a large amount of public engagement and fishery compliance work, and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to work in the field with a strong commitment to the department's health and safety culture.

    The position will be focussed on :

    • Work alongside your team to carry out fishery field delivery, supporting day-to-day operational work plans, such as angler track maintenance, and pest control
    • Undertake a range of work, such as; vessel operations, angler advocacy and compliance, monitoring and data collection, and Tongariro National Trout Centre (visitor asset management)
    • Contribute to delivery of other programmes to assist with the sustainability of, and angler participation in, the Taupo Sports Fishery
    • Opportunity for structural work, including refurbishment of fish track assets
    • In addition, other opportunities are available across the work of the wider department, including fire, biodiversity and visitor assets, so there will be plenty on offer to keep the role interesting and challenging.

      Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

      If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you :

    • Strong interest in fishing
    • Good level of emotional intelligence and self-awareness, and is able to speak confidently and convey information to diverse array of people, and cultures while undertaking monitoring work, advocacy, or compliance related activities
    • Self-reliant, driven self-starter who is capable of working alone in remote locations and occasionally in arduous conditions
    • Good health and physical fitness and are able to pass criminal background check, medical exam, drug test, and dive fitness test
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including formal report writing
    • Proficient with Microsoft office applications and has a good level of computer literacy
    • Good problem solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail and is able accurately record data
    • Team player who embraces collaboration, active listening and has solid problem solving skills
    • Confidence working in and around water
    • Available for weekend work and to work outside normal hours
    • Full NZ drivers licence
    • Desirable :

    • fly fishing and or trout fishing experience
    • Skills and or experience in enforcement, investigations, or security
    • First Aid Certificate
    • Boat handling experience, or Boat Masters Certificate, or similar qualification
    • Experience using a wide range of machinery such as chainsaws, brushcutters, mowers, tractors
    • Basic carpentry skills

      The Regional Operations Group is responsible for delivering conservation work on the ground through our biodiversity, recreation / historic, community engagement and visitor centre teams.
