Job Description

Prepare future doctors for clinical practice and workforce readiness.

  • Shape a curriculum that prepares graduates for clinical practice
  • Champion te Tiriti-led, culturally safe, and equitable medical education

About the role

This is a rare opportunity to lead the final year of the Doctor of Medicine programme at the New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine (NZGSM) — the first new medical school in Aotearoa New Zealand in over 50 years.

You will guide the Trainee Intern (TI) year, ensuring students are fully prepared for their transition into the New Zealand health workforce as PGY1 interns. You will oversee the coordination of four ten-week rotations — medicine, surgery, selectives, and electives — and ensure students gain comprehensive experience across hospital, primary care, and rural settings.

You will provide academic and clinical leadership, ensuring the Year 4 curriculum delivers excellence in teaching, cultural safety, and accreditation compliance. Working with the Assessment Lead, you will oversee final-year assessments and support students in consolidating their professional and clinical competence.

This is a 0.4 FTE, fixed-term role for 24 months, with competitive salary and benefits.

For more information on the role please see the position description. For a confidential conversation about the role, please contact Professor David McCormack, Interim Dean of Medicine, All applications must be submitted through the online portal; emailed applications will not be accepted.

Who are you?

Ko wai koe? – Who are you?

You are a skilled clinician and educator with extensive experience in final-year medical education, clinical supervision, or programme leadership. You hold a medical degree and are eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

You bring a track record of excellence in clinical teaching, curriculum coordination, and multi-site programme delivery. You are collaborative, organised, and adept at fostering partnerships across hospitals, communities, and educational settings.

You are also a leader who models professionalism, reflection, and integrity — deeply committed to te Tiriti o Waitangi, hauora Māori, and equity in healthcare and education.

Who are we?

Ko wai mātou? – Who are we?

The New Zealand Graduate School of Medicine is a bold new initiative from the University of Waikato. It was established to meet the critical need for a medical workforce that is prepared for the realities of primary care, rural health, and community-centred practice.

Inspired by international best practice and grounded in te Tiriti o Waitangi, the School aims to educate doctors who are not only clinically excellent but culturally competent, digitally confident and socially accountable.

Why should you apply for this position?

He aha ngā take me tono mai ai koe? – Why should you apply for this position?
