Volunteer | Railway Team Member

Are you passionate about heritage, engineering, or railways? Join MOTAT’s Railway Team and help bring New Zealand’s history to life!

Our team restores heritage technology in both the engineering and carpentry workshops, working on steam and diesel locomotives, traction engines, steam rollers, and railway carriages. It’s a hands‑on way to preserve and share how steam power and railways shaped Aotearoa.

What you’ll do :

• Assist with the maintenance and restoration of Motat's Railway & Steam collection.
• Support railway conservation projects.
• Engage with visitors and share the stories behind Motat's Railway & Steam collection.
• Help keep the workshop safe and tidy.

Time Commitment :

Standard volunteer days are : Workshops Tuesdays 7am–10pm & 2nd Saturday of the month 8am‑4pm & Live days 3rd Sunday of the month 7am–5pm

If you're only available on other days, feel free to discuss alternative arrangements with the Team Lead.
