Senior Journalist

Based in Hamilton, you will generate compelling, accurate stories for the Waikato Times website and the newspaper.

We especially welcome applicants with court or local body reporting experience.

Key Responsibilities

Produce high-quality stories and multimedia content to a consistently high standard.

Report on major local issues, regularly breaking news and leading the conversation.

Identify and develop original ideas that inform, entertain and shape the local and national news agenda.

Understand the interests of Waikato communities and uncover the stories that matter most.

Make effective use of emerging tools, including AI, to support research, content creation and audience engagement.

Qualifications

Strong journalistic skills, with the ability to write clearly and edit your own work.

Experience in packaging content with immediate appeal across digital and multimedia formats.

High level of fluency in social media platforms as newsgathering and storytelling tools.

A commitment to ethical, balanced, and well-researched journalism.

A passion for serving audiences with quality reporting and insight.

Confidence in contributing to a collaborative newsroom environment as well as working independently.

Self-motivation, excellent time management, and the ability to work to tight deadlines.

A willingness to contribute ideas and take part in lively editorial discussions.
