Te Whiwhinga mahi | The employment opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced operational leader to take on the role of Human Rights Information and Support Services (HRISS) Manager . This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Commission’s national human rights information and support service — the first point of contact for thousands of people who reach out to Te Kāhui Tika Tangata, the Human Rights Commission , each year.

As the HRISS Manager, you will lead a dedicated front-line team providing high-quality, timely, and compassionate responses to human rights enquiries, discrimination complaints, and broader human rights issues. You will ensure the effective triage and pathwaying of more than 5,000 communications annually, supporting people to access information about their rights, guidance, and other Commission services.

The HRISS team is part of the Information and Dispute Resolution (IDR) rōpū , which provides responsive and high-quality services to people experiencing discrimination or broader human rights issues. The team is the Commission’s front-facing service, ensuring that all enquiries are managed appropriately and that people and communities receive meaningful information and support.

Reporting to the Head of Information and Dispute Resolution , the HRISS Manager works closely with the Dispute Resolution Manager and Senior Practice Advisor to ensure consistent, best-practice policies, procedures, and standards across the Commission’s enquiry and complaint-handling functions.

Your leadership will be instrumental in fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture that reflects Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Commission’s values in action.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will bring :

  • Proven experience in managing contact centre, complaints-handling, or information services that deliver quality outcomes for diverse communities.
  • A minimum of three years’ operational experience in people leadership, including coaching, developing, and managing high-performing teams.
  • A strong commitment to and understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its practical application in the work of the Commission.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire confidence, build trust, and influence across teams.
  • Experience in operational planning, performance monitoring, risk management, and continuous improvement of service delivery systems and processes.
  • High personal and professional standards, modelling the Commission’s values of Mana Tangata – human dignity; Māia, Tika, Pono – courage and integrity; and Whanaungatanga – relationships.
