Overview
The AS Manager is responsible for managing the Animal Services Department, providing animal breeding / management and testing services and leadership to the Whitemans Valley site. The Animal Service Manager ensures that quality control testing meets production requirements and regulatory specifications. Testing covers guinea pig, rabbit, mouse, hamster, sheep and cattle. The role is in the Quality organization, reports to the Site Quality Head, and is based in Whitemans Valley as the senior person supervising day-to-day site operations. The nature of animal work may require duties outside normal hours.
Responsibilities
- Set and manage the annual budget to ensure adherence to budget and cost control targets.
- Set and manage the capital budget and prepare capital requests for equipment and facilities replacement as required.
- Prepare assumptive scenarios (AS) of performance against the budget plan.
- Coordinate the activities of the team to facilitate meeting objectives and lead times.
- Ensure suitable resources are requested and planned to meet business objectives (e.g., staff, facilities improvements, equipment, and consumables).
- Drive continuous improvement in Animal Services activities through leadership in resource utilization, cost review, and participation in process and profit improvement programs.
- Hold regular team meetings to prioritize and manage objectives.
- Conduct objective setting sessions, manage team performance, and conduct annual performance reviews with timely improvement actions.
- Employ and manage casual staff as required to meet workload within budget constraints.
- Communicate quality assurance and regulatory requirements to all parties.
- Provide reports to the Site Quality Head to demonstrate departmental performance; promote animal testing reduction and support the global 3R initiative; act as AEC Secretary / Executive Officer for the Company AEC committee.
- Coordinate with other departments to support regulatory and quality initiatives.
Staff Training and Development
Employ and manage casual staff as required to meet workload within budget constraints.Ensure sufficient training is available for tasks performed.Coach and develop staff to build talent and capability in the team.Conduct periodic meetings to plan and review induction, training, and development.Ensure adequate staff training and back-up support for all functions and that trainers have the necessary knowledge and competence.Provide training / assistance to staff in line with company and quality standards requirements.Attend identified training courses based on performance or development needs.Compliance
Ensure vaccine manufacture activities align with corporate and statutory guidelines and regulations.Comply with the Animal Welfare Act for all animals in the companys care, including in-vivo assays; participate as a mandatory member and chair of the Animal Ethics Committee.Ensure facilities and laboratories comply with local legislation affecting the site.Complete corrective actions on time from audits, and assist in regulatory inspections or audits.Strive for continuous improvement of quality systems and alignment with corporate and site QA / QC processes.Target zero overdue items for quality activities (deviations, CAPA, audits, annual reviews, and change management).Lead or support the introduction of new systems / software / technology as required.Assist with accurate regulatory and other compliance submissions.Testing and Animal Services
Maintain suitable consumables, facilities, equipment, and materials for quality control tests and animal management.UseSales and Operations Planning data to project future test / animal / resource requirements.Ensure operational systems enable animal breeding and testing to meet the business schedule.Ensure test data is reliable and accurate; verify that SOPs and templates are current and followed; ensure data is reviewed for GMP compliance.Receive handover of new tests and transfer tests from other facilities via proper protocols.Document all test data and validation according to site and GMP standards.Facility Management
Maintain the site, farm, buildings, and equipment.Pharmacovigilance (PV) Responsibilities
Follow global and local procedures for Adverse Events and Product Quality complaint reporting timelines.EHS
Identify, document, assess, and control hazards and environmental aspects; ensure compliance with legal and other requirements.Contribute to EHS objectives and improvement projects; provide necessary information and training to employees to work safely.Compile EHS reports as required by management and authorities; conduct audits and implement corrective actions.What Should You Have
Education
Tertiary qualification in science; Veterinary / Animal / Biological sciences are preferred.Experience
10+ years in animal breeding, animal facility management, and related animal testing laboratories.Knowledge of animal ethics requirements; strong understanding of GMP / GLP and laboratory quality management systems.People management experience with a proven track record of leading a diverse technical team.Experience arranging service contracts or coordinating with engineering / maintenance managers to ensure services are in place.Desirable
Understanding of vaccine or pharmaceutical manufacture and experience in those industries.Who We Are
