Special Education Advisor – Ministry of Education New Zealand
Overview
- Fixed‑term, full‑time role through to June 2026.
- Based in Taupō, Bay of Plenty.
- Part of the close‑knit, community‑focused Learning Support team.
Responsibilities
Identify patterns or contributing factors influencing learning, wellbeing and behaviour.Work collaboratively with educators, parents, caregivers, whānau to enhance understanding about the child and their behaviours.Support adults to make changes to the learning environment so behaviour can be more effectively managed and situations stabilised.Facilitate access to wider services and support, e.g., speech and language therapy, local agencies.Collaboratively assess, plan, develop, support and monitor implementation of effective individual (or group) learning plans.Enhance inclusive practices in early learning services, schools and other settings.Qualifications & Skills
A teaching qualification with a minimum of three years teaching experience.Postgraduate Diploma in Special Education or Educational Psychology desirable.Extensive knowledge and skills supporting children and young people with severe and challenging behaviours and learning needs.Experience and willingness to work collaboratively and support other education professionals and agencies.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with children, young people, families / whānau and teachers.Experience working in Māori‑medium settings or ability to work across Māori‑informed practice models advantageous.Understanding and application of the principles of Te Tirirati o Waitangi and tangata whenatanga.Commitment to evidence‑based interventions demonstrating inclusive educational practice.Full current driver’s licence; regional travel required.Willingness to adhere to Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.Salary
Salary range : $69,966–$118,450 per annum + 3% KiwiSaver. Salary will reflect individual skills and experience.
Location & Travel
Based at your Taupō office. Applicants living in South Waikato, Rotorua, or wider Bay of Plenty who can commute may also be considered.
