Laboratory Technician
12 Month Fixed Term Full Time / Flexible Part time / Permanent Full Time
Position Purpose
The purpose of these roles is to assist the laboratory team in maintaining the day to day running of the NZCR laboratory and ensuring all aspects of laboratory procedures, relating to clinical studies, occur in accordance with study specific protocols, NZCR standard operating procedures (SOPs) and good clinical practice requirements (ICH GCP).
Responsibilities
Technical
Ensure sample set up is carried out in accordance with study protocol, SOPs and with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Ensure separation of biological samples are carried out in accordance with study protocol, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and GCP.
Day to day operation and maintenance of laboratory, ensuring efficient sample processing & storage in accordance with study protocols and SOPs
Ensure sample shipments are carried out in accordance with the protocol and SOPs
Preparation of shipping documents and packing lists
Packing and storing samples as per study requirements and laboratory samples
Perform specialised tests independently and maintain accurate documentation e.g., Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs), cell-stimulation, sample biopsies.
Operational
Create and maintain local laboratory documents.
Ensure the monthly laboratory cleaning process is undertaken according to the correct policies and procedures.
Manage barcoding and digital tracking of samples as needed for the site.
Support the storage of study supplies and monitor stock levels, facilitating ordering-in of additional supplies when required.
Advise the Laboratory manager or Team Lead if any stocks needed.
Assist in the recording / registering of samples, delivery of laboratory samples to off-site local laboratories as per local requirements.
Booking courier collections following shipment schedules and IATA guidelines.
Quality
Maintain compliance with all New Zealand Clinical Research standards, protocols, and regulatory requirements, adhering to Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Regularly evaluates, documents, and refines clinical and operational processes to enhance accuracy, consistency, and overall quality.
Assists in training employees in quality standards, policies, and procedures, ensuring all team members understand and implement best practices.
Ensures accuracy, consistency, and currency in all research documentation and reporting, including accurate record-keeping, version control and timely updates.
Workplace Health and Safety
Champions a culture of health and safety, ensuring preventative measures are in place to minimize risk to team members and participants.
Actively identify and report health and safety hazards, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage.
Understands and complies with NZCR's Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Maintains adherence to all safety standards and processes.
Commits to personal health and safety at work.
General
Undertaking any other appropriate duties that may be required.
Minimum Position Qualifications
Education / Experience
Science based qualification to a minimum of bachelor's degree
Some experience in a laboratory would be beneficial (outside of university qualification)
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Laboratory experience particularly in plasma / serum separation.
Experience with Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) isolation, cell-stimulation and other sample processing work done in a Biological Safety Cabinet.
Ability to maintain successful working relationships within the Laboratory team and other NZCR staff.
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to follow carefully defined processes
Self-motivated and well organised with the ability to multitask and work unsupervised.
Ability to work under pressure and work to tight deadlines
Knowledge and understanding of good clinical practice (GCP)
Flexibility to work out of normal working hours, including evenings, nights and weekends, when necessary, as per the laboratory roster.
Experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications, e.g., Excel
