Senior Network Engineer

Wellington City Council is on a mission to create a secure, connected, and future-ready digital environment for our city and we're looking for a Senior Network Engineer to help make it happen.

This is your chance to step into a senior technical role where you'll design, implement, and maintain the networks that keep Pōneke running. You'll play a critical part in shaping our network strategy, mentoring other engineers, and ensuring our systems are resilient, scalable, and secure.

Āu ake mahi | What you'll do

• Network Design & Delivery - Lead the design and implementation of world-class network infrastructure, balancing innovation with reliability.
• Fortinet & Security Leadership - Manage firewalls, Zero Trust platforms, and other security technologies to provide a safe and secure environment.
• Optimisation & Automation - Use tools to automate network monitoring, management, and performance tuning.
• Mentoring & Leadership - Coach and support other engineers, helping grow their skills and delivering technical excellence across the team.
• Continuous Improvement - Champion best practices, risk management, and innovative approaches to enhance network performance and reliability.
• Collaboration - work with various internal teams (infrastructure team, AWS and Azure, Microsoft 365 services, etc) and trusted partners for digital and technology services.

We're after an experienced network engineer who is ready to lead from the front :

• 8+ years of network engineering experience with proven success in large, complex environments.
• Strong expertise in network protocols, Fortinet technologies, and Zero Trust principles.
• Skilled in network tools for monitoring, optimisation, and topology documentation.
• Exposure to Cloud platforms, and service transitions.
• A natural coach and mentor who can lift capability across the team.
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Familiarity with Agile delivery and a passion for continuous improvement.

Certifications such as Fortinet NSE, CCNP, or other industry-recognised qualifications are a bonus.
