Network Security Engineer – Zero Trust

Wellington City Council is on a mission to deliver safe, secure, and reliable digital services for our city - and we need a Zero Trust Engineer to help make it happen.

This is a great opportunity to be at the forefront of cybersecurity innovation. You'll play a key role in designing, implementing, and maintaining Zero Trust security architectures that will protect Wellington's digital assets and keep our services resilient.

Working in our Network Cyber Team, you'll collaborate with architects, cyber analysts, and engineers to transform how we approach security building a safer, smarter digital environment for everyone in Pōneke.

Āu ake mahi | What you'll do

• Designing & Building Secure Architectures - Implement Zero Trust principles across networks, systems, and applications.
• Fortinet and AWS Environment - Configure and optimise Fortinet firewalls, proxies, and security solutions to strengthen our perimeter and internal security posture.
• Risk Assessment & Mitigation - Identify vulnerabilities, conduct threat modelling, and deploy advanced security controls.
• Continuous Monitoring & Response - Use SIEM tools and Fortinet security solutions to monitor threats, respond rapidly to incidents, and strengthen our defences.
• Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing - Work closely with internal teams, vendors, and partners while supporting others to understand and apply Zero Trust practices.

Ngā tohu me ngā wheako | Qualifications and experience

We're after a passionate security professional with :

• Fortinet experience - hands-on skills with FortiGate, FortiAnalyser, and related technologies.
• A solid background in cybersecurity or network engineering (5-7+ years' experience preferred).
• Practical experience implementing Zero Trust principles, frameworks, and security controls.
• Exposure and experience with EntraID and Sentinel
• Strong knowledge of risk management, identity and access management, and incident response.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
• Certifications such as CISSP, CISM, CEH, CCZT, or Fortinet NSE (an advantage but not essential).
