Job description

Family Home Relievers Hamilton and Tauranga

2 casual positions available to join our team as a Family Home reliever in the Waikato region.

Oranga Tamariki—Ministry for Children is committed to putting tamariki first. We believe aroha is vital, respect the mana of people, and are tika and pono . We value whakapapa and recognize that oranga is a journey.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

Waikato operates 5 Family Homes where 1 to 5 tamariki are cared for by 2 Family Home Caregivers. When caregivers take breaks of 2 to 15 days, Family Home Relievers maintain a safe, caring, responsible, and supportive family environment 24 / 7. Our Family Homes are smoke-free, so please consider this when applying.

The reliever role includes cooking, shopping, recreation, helping with homework, and supervision. At the start of each shift, a detailed handover is provided, and a designated social worker from our team liaises with each home, offering regular clinical supervision. Care plans are in place for tamariki, and relievers are expected to ensure activities align with these plans and handover instructions.

Ideal candidates are flexible to be available 24 hours a day for at least 4 consecutive days and committed to maintaining a supportive family environment.

The role may suit those seeking occasional work or more regular hours, depending on availability.

Key requirements of the role include :

  • Current full, clean driver’s license (Restricted license okay if obtained prior to starting)
  • Ability to pass police and Oranga Tamariki vetting (the 'clean slate' policy does not apply)
  • Professional references from current and previous employers
  • Experience in social services or working with children and youth is advantageous
  • Understanding of cross-cultural practices, Tikanga Māori, and Pacific cultures
  • Resilience to support children with varied needs
  • Positive role modeling
  • Calm, professional manner
  • Excellent listening, oral, observation skills, and ability to write handover notes

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and expertise.

Nōu te rourou | What's in it for you

Our purpose is to ensure tamariki are in loving whānau and communities where their well-being can be realized. We believe early involvement and showing love and care give children the best chance to thrive as happy New Zealanders.

We offer a supportive team committed to well-being, along with significant training and professional development. As this is a casual role, the pay rate is $26 per hour plus 8% holiday pay.

Me pēhea te tuku tono | How to Apply

Apply online with your CV and Cover Letter. If you are an existing Oranga Tamariki employee, please apply using your login credentials.

Hurry, as applications close on 26th August 2025!

If interested, please review our code of conduct, which sets out our expectations for staff and requires a drug- and alcohol-free presentation at work.
