An exciting opportunity has become available for a full-time ranger with the Tiritiri Matangi Island team.
Salary ranges from $65,070 to $75,981 depending on skills and experience.
3-year full-time island posting (option to extend for a further 2 years) based on Tiritiri Matangi
Mō te tūranga | About the role
Tiritiri Matangi is a world-renowned island sanctuary, attracting over 30,000 visitors each year, a ferry runs Wednesday to Sunday every week allowing day visitors to explore this scientific reserve. Following the successful eradication of unwanted predators, the island now provides a safe haven for rare native bird species and tuatara within its restored habitats. We are seeking a motivated and adaptable Ranger - Biodiversity / Heritage & Visitors to join our small on-island team. This role is critical in protecting and enhancing the island's unique biodiversity, caring for its cultural and natural heritage, and providing outstanding experience for visitors. This is a two-ranger island, with overlapping 10-day shifts. Accommodation is provided for the duration of the shift, and the ranger is expected to live on island during this time and to come off during their rostered 4 days off. The position will be focussed on :
Engaging with Members of the Public and general interactions including public speaking in front of large audiences
Working with iwi partners
Working with community group
Amenity maintenance, groundskeeping
Visitor facility inductions
Biosecurity advocacy and surveillance
Visitor Safety
Infrastructure maintenance
Supporting biodiversity projects such as Hihi and Takahē recovery
Volunteer managementThe role on Tiritiri Matangi is suited for somebody that thrives in a fast-paced environment, can juggle multiple conflicting priorities and is comfortable in a very public and people focused role.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
The ideal candidate will have strong backcountry field skills, biodiversity experience, experience of living and working in remote locations, good communication skills, experience working with iwi, and a practical background in infrastructure maintenance. Required skills include proficiency in scrub bars and weed spraying, physical fitness, and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs. A flexible, team-oriented approach and a willingness to learn are essential. If you have some of following, we are keen to hear from you :
Good level of physical fitness (backcountry experience)
Ability to adhere to strict health, safety and well-being systems
Field delivery skills such as scrub baring and track maintenance
Tech savvy skills with ability to learn new systems.
Ability to work alone and within a team; task prioritisation, initiative.
Strong health and safety focus.
Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with a range of stakeholders.
Ability to work in isolated environments.
Hands-on practical skillset.
Comfortable engaging and working in partnership with iwi and tangata whenua
Full New Zealand Driver Licence with the ability to drive a manual desiredDesirable :
Experience and / or qualifications with chainsaws, scrub bars and driving LUVs

The ranger will report into the Supervisor within the Inner Islands team. This wider team is distributed across islands within the Hauraki Gulf with most senior staff based on the mainland.
