About the Role
Reporting to the General Manager – Assets & Infrastructure, the Engineering Manager is responsible for ensuring Napier Ports marine infrastructure continues to safely and resiliently support the ports strategic objectives.
At its core, you will oversee the execution of planned and unplanned asset management & engineering activities within Napier Ports marine infrastructure portfolio.
This portfolio contains some of our most critical infrastructure assets — including wharf structures, revetments, beaches, breakwaters, and aids to navigation equipment.
You will also oversee our dredging programme to ensure our marine areas continue to safely support vessel navigation
Your responsibilities will include anything from scheduled inspections, responding to seismic events through to large scale restorative projects and even major construction projects – no two days are ever the same and as a technical expert to the business, you will be looked upon to ensure that the use and development of our infrastructure remain compliant with design standards and statutory obligations.
Key responsibilities
Oversee the planning and execution of planned and unplanned asset management and engineering activities across the marine infrastructure portfolio.
Manage critical assets including wharf structures, revetments, beaches, breakwaters, and aids to navigation equipment.
Contribute to growth, development and continuous improvement initiatives that improve asset health, performance and resilience.
Lead and oversee the dredging programme to ensure safe and reliable vessel navigation.
Conduct and manage scheduled inspections and condition assessments of marine infrastructure assets.
Coordinate response and recovery activities following seismic events and other unplanned incidents.
Deliver and oversee large-scale restorative projects and major construction projects within the marine environment.
Act as a technical expert, ensuring infrastructure use and development complies with design standards and statutory obligations.
Skills & Experience
We're looking for an accomplished engineering leader with :
Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status.
A bachelor's degree in Structural or Civil Engineering (postgraduate study desirable).
Proven experience in the design, construction, or lifecycle management of precision concrete structures (maritime or port experience ideal).
Deep knowledge of NZ and international design codes and standards.
Significant project management experience with a track record of successful delivery.
Strong ability to engage consultants, contractors, and cross-functional teams.
Familiarity with asset management principles and lifecycle planning (advantageous).
Key competencies include technical excellence, strategic thinking, clear communication, collaboration, commercial awareness, and a strong focus on safety and quality.
