The Team
The Older Persons Mental Health Service (OPMH) provides
assessment, treatment, and support to people aged 65 years and over across
Canterbury.
We work closely with Older Persons Health inpatient and community
geriatric services, Adult Specialist Mental Health, primary care, and a wide
range of community providers.
Our service includes :
purpose-built inpatient wards at Burwood Hospital
mental health day hospital
memory assessment clinic
large community mental health team
old age psychiatry consult liaison teamYou will join a dedicated service where ten psychiatrists
lead interdisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-focused care.

We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist with experience
and passion for Older Persons Mental Health to join our team in Christchurch.
part-time (0.5 FTE) until May 2028
psychiatric assessment, consultation, and ongoing treatment
clinical leadership within an interdisciplinary team
bicultural service delivery in line with Te Tiriti o Waitangi
and mentor medical staff, registrars, and trainees
to service development, research, and quality improvementYou will also undertake responsibilities under the Mental
Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992, and work within a
supportive peer-review and professional development framework.

Essential :registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a
Psychiatrist
or an equivalent specialist qualification recognised by RANZCP
qualification in Psychiatry of Old Age or extensive experience in this
field
experience at SMO level managing psychiatric patientsDesirable :
supervision, teaching, and mentoring skills
to balance a complex clinical workload
communication and teamwork skills
