About the role
Oranga Tamariki developed a Disability Strategy in 2022‑23 and has now approved the first phase of a programme to better meet the disability needs and rights of tamariki, rangatahi, parents and caregivers. The Senior Advisor will work within the Transition Support Services team and as part of the Disability Programme to support improved experiences for disabled young people transitioning to adulthood, with particular focus on rangatahi exiting Youth Justice settings.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice, case-level escalation and advocacy for disabled rangatahi exiting Youth Justice settings.
- Build connections across the organisation and with external stakeholders to ensure rangatahi with disabilities receive the right support at the right time.
- Advocate for improved practices in planning for the pathway to adult services.
- Collaborate with the Transition Support Services team and the Disability Programme to support improved experiences for disabled young people transitioning to adulthood.
Qualifications
Proven expertise in the disability, social service, health or justice sectors.A tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline.Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to build and maintain rapport with others, including when working with virtual teams.Strong skills in research, analysis and translating insights into actionable strategies.Ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences and influence and engage diverse stakeholders (internal and cross‑agency).Deep knowledge of cross‑cultural practices, including tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ culture.Desirable : knowledge of different perspectives of disability including medical, social, cultural / indigenous methodologies.Desirable : experience working with and responding to the diverse needs, experiences and views of tamariki, rangatahi, parents and caregivers that Oranga Tamariki interact with.Desirable : clear and genuine connection to the disability community through personal lived experience, community involvement, cultural background or professional / voluntary work aligned to the Disability Programme’s focus.Benefits
