You will work as part of a team of four House Surgeons (3 dentally qualified and 1 medically qualified).
Our department emphasizes clinical teaching and offers opportunities for skill development in clinics, theatres, on-call, and courses through a hands-on approach.
We will help you develop your oral surgery skills, including surgical extractions, biopsies, suturing, and other minor OMS procedures relevant to dental practice or future postgraduate training.
We support managing medically complex patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.As early career dentists, progression and upskilling are important.
We encourage research presentations at hospital dental and OMS conferences and academic publications.
Support is available for RACDS primary exams, IV Sedation courses, and conference presentations.
Opportunities exist for advancement to Senior House Surgeon and OMS Registrar roles, and support for medical degree applications.The department covers all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including : Management of complex facial traumaOrthognathic and deformity correction surgeryDentoalveolar Surgery (third molar extractions, impacted teeth, impacted teeth exposure, implant placement for oncology patients)Management of benign pathologyTMJ surgery including total joint replacementUnique to Waikato Hospital is managing head and neck oncology cases, including microvascular free flap reconstruction, providing excellent teaching opportunities.
This includes : Work-up of oral cancer patientsManagement within a multidisciplinary teamBiopsy of suspicious lesionsPeri-operative oncology and reconstruction managementOncological surveillanceThe unit also manages facial infections, ward inpatients, and ED presentations, with strong senior support and supervision from Registrars.Teaching, clinical governance, and research are emphasized, with weekly sessions covering radiology, pathology, morbidity and mortality, trauma, and multidisciplinary cases.
Collaboration with specialists in Paediatric, Prosthodontic, and Special Care Dentistry provides comprehensive care for patients with complex needs.
Outpatient clinics and theatre sessions offer surgical exposure.
The service is a regional center for complex maxillofacial interventions, equipped with modern technology such as CBCT, 3D printing, and surgical planning software.The Waikato region offers diverse outdoor and cultural experiences, including beaches, mountains, and local produce.
